Climate Actions and Reflections from October
“It’s not just about planting trees — it’s about growing them, nurturing them, and holding ourselves accountable for the future we want, because planting trees is just an action and growing trees is commitment”
October 2025 was a milestone month filled with impactful engagements, learning, and advocacy in the climate space across Nairobi and beyond. From high-level summits to digital storytelling, my work reflected an unwavering commitment to climate justice, community empowerment, and sustainable futures for Africa.
Sustainability Summit 2025: Reimagining Africa’s Climate Future
On October 6th, Nairobi vibrated with purpose as ICELIS Global and the Center for Climate Justice convened climate leaders at the Sustainability Summit 2025. The event radiated hope and resilience, emphasizing Africa’s role as a steward of natural wealth.

Keynotes by Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim and Elizabeth Maruma Mrema underscored the continent’s central importance in climate solutions. Throughout the day, panels covered community-led climate action, inclusion, and cutting-edge green innovations by young African entrepreneurs.
I found the discussions particularly inspiring as they amplified the voices of women and youth and showcased community restoration efforts, from degraded arid lands to rural electrification via clean energy. The summit was a powerful platform for forging meaningful connections among advocates dedicated to Africa’s just and sustainable transition.
Mazingira Day 2025: Restoring Nature for Climate Resilience
This year’s Mazingira Day carried the impactful theme “Our Land, Our Future: Restoring Nature for Climate Resilience.” I was honored to speak at the Mazingira Day 2025 Webinar hosted by Sober Living CBO and Wezesha Voices Network. The webinar united climate experts, youth advocates, and sustainability champions around the vital goal of environmental restoration in Kenya.

My talk emphasized that awareness alone isn’t enough, action and accountability must accompany it. We must restore degraded lands, protect forests and rivers, and foster sustainable livelihoods for a resilient Kenya. Every tree planted and cleanup organized contributes to building green community resilience.
I was also featured on Switch Media’s Mazingira Day special by journalist Antony Achayo, where I shared my journey from a young climate advocate to a national voice for environmental education and action.

Africa (Youth) Innovation, Climate & Leadership Summit 2025
On October 30th, I participated in a panel on Climate Justice in Nairobi at the Africa (Youth) Innovation, Climate & Leadership Summit, Ubunifu Hub. The event energized young leaders passionate about innovation and inclusive environmental stewardship.

I stressed the importance of amplifying African community-driven climate narratives and highlighted that climate justice must address equity for people, ecosystems, and future generations. The dialogue powerfully reminded us that African youth are creators of solutions, not just bearers of climate burdens.
Advocacy Through Writing
In October, I authored two key articles. One reflected on “Raila Odinga’s environmental legacy,” celebrating his bold leadership in conserving the Mau Forest Complex and championing climate justice in Kenya.

Another article for World Food Day 2025 explored Kenya’s path toward sustainable nutrition through climate-resilient agriculture, spotlighting smallholder farmers, indigenous crops, and innovative food systems shaping our nation’s green food future.

Corporate Sustainability Engagement
I also attended the Equity Group 2024 Sustainability Report Launch, learning how corporate leadership fosters transformation. The theme “A Sustainable World is a Transformed Africa” highlighted inclusive growth, climate resilience, and sustainable finance.

I published an article showcasing Equity Group’s progress empowering smallholder farmers and refugees, advancing clean energy, and embedding sustainability at business cores to build a resilient Africa.
Empowerment Through Digital Climate Storytelling: Project Athena
From October 20th to 30th, I was part of cohort 2 of Project Athena, a transformative virtual training empowering women and girls through digital climate storytelling with a gender lens.
The 10-day course deepened my understanding of gender dynamics in climate adaptation and sharpened skills in digital content creation and advocacy. I completed a storytelling assignment amplifying climate narratives from women’s perspectives, gaining leadership and creative confidence while joining an inspiring network of women climate advocates.

Professional Development: Climate Research and Scientific Writing
I also received my certificate from EcoSciGen for successfully completing the Climate Research and Scientific Writing workshop in October 2025. This professional development opportunity enhanced my research and writing skills, empowering me to communicate scientific climate information more effectively and contribute to evidence-based advocacy.

This October has been one of growth, connection, and recommitment to the journey of climate advocacy. Every summit, every article, every training has reinforced my resolution to keep pushing forward in the struggle toward inclusive, accountable, community-led climate action in Kenya and Africa.

Great work done Risper Asembo The climate reality leader and Green Ring Award winner.
